Reading Syllabus
Course Description:
This is a program that teaches students 6 reading strategies: Preview, Making Connections, Recall, Activate Prior Knowledge, Interacting with the Text, and Evaluating. These 6 strategies are taught through short stories. Each strategy is taught by Learning (where the teacher models how to do the skill), Practice (where the teacher guides the students on how to do the skill), and Apply (where the students work on the specific skill themselves). Students will use these 6 strategies to help students gain confidence in their non-fiction reading. Students will practice their fiction reading through classroom novels and AR books.
Text Book: Read for Real
Materials:
Computer, paper, pen or pencil, AR book, Read for Real Book
Homework
Students will have 30 minutes of AR reading each night at home.
Assignments are due on their due date.
If it is not completed at all it will result in a ZAP.
If it is incomplete they will get the grade that they earned, however they will stay in after school to finish the rest of the work.
*** NO EXTRA CREDIT IS GIVEN***
Most of the time students will be given time in class to work on their assignments. Assignments should not take more than 15-20 minutes for MOST students.
Students will have a weekly L-J quiz.
Classroom Management/Discipline:
We will follow the BIST procedures set by the district.
